Missouri State Representative Steve Cookson has been named Chairman of the House Committee on Elementary and Secondary Education.

Cookson, a Republican from Poplar Bluff, was chosen by Speaker of the House Timothy Jones.

In a news release from his office, Cookson said:

“I am humbled the Speaker has entrusted me with this tremendous responsibility.  There are several highly qualified representatives capable of administering this Chairmanship and to be chosen is truly a great honor.”

Before he was elected, Cookson spent 30 years in education.  He has served as a bus driver, classroom teacher, coach, middle school and high school principal and superintendent.  He also served as the chairman of the Board of Trustees for Three Rivers Community College.  During his tenure he received numerous awards and recognition for his work in education.
